Overview

Craig and Darlene are working with SIL and Wycliffe Bible Translators to train and support Namakura speakers on Efate and the Shepherd Islands in Bible translation. They also provide technical and software support for other language projects and are involved in literacy work.

What our week looks like

Craig and Darlene are serving the Namakura people who are scattered over six small islands called the Shepherd Islands and on Efate, the main island of Vanuatu.

Their week is a mixture of activities. They are preparing to start the Bible translation project this year and are both learning the Namakura language. In addition, Craig provides computer software support for Bible translators around the world who are using a software application that he wrote. Darlene is involved in literacy and making digital reading books in the languages of the Shepherd Islands.

Bible translation for Namakura speakers briefly started twenty-five years ago but stopped when the expatriates left. The people have been praying ever since for the Bible translation project to start again. Craig and Darlene are humbled to have this opportunity to serve and bless the Namakura people with God's Word in their language.

In the lead-up to commencing Bible translation, they have been conducting workshops around the various islands to teach the people what is involved in Bible translation. The people have been practicing the process by translating a small Bible story. When they start hearing God's Word in their language, they become emotional as it touches their hearts deeply.

Things to celebrate

  • They are grateful for the privilege of serving the Lord in Vanuatu.

  • They are thankful for the Namakura community, who are working together across church denominations to see the Bible translated into their language.

Things to pray for

  • Pray for continued unity amongst the different denominations and for wisdom as the Bible translation project is established across multiple islands.

  • Pray for Craig and Darlene and those who will be involved, for God's protection over this important work.
