Overview
Bill and Angela are working with Colombians and Venezuelans in the small town of La Calera to establish a church that reaches out in love to the community.
What our week looks like
La Calera is a rural town of about 15,000 people, located 40 minutes from the bustling capital city of Bogota. Several years ago, together with four other Colombian and Venezuelan families, we helped plant a church there. Our role is in Bible teaching, leadership training and discipleship.
On a typical week Bill leads weekly Bible studies, prepares the Sunday sermon and meets with the other leaders for planning and working through church issues. He often has one-on-one meetings with several men throughout the week.
Angela cooks for the Friday children's outreach, keeps up with the church financials and spends Saturdays with the youth group. Together we try to host at least one family for a meal on the weekend.
We also have a heart for Colombians throughout the country who serve either full or part-time in their churches and we try to host one for a weekend away about once a month. Angela serves as the administrator of the Colombian Workers' Fund that channels overseas donations to help support some of these local missionaries.
We have been encouraged to see believers from our church learning to minister to the Venezuelan refugees who live in the area. The church has become a safe haven for these displaced people and it has been a joy to put faith into action in serving them.
We live in a context where historically many people grew up with a ritualistic faith and where the evangelical gospel has now been preached for over half a century. Unfortunately many unhealthy churches, false teachings and prosperity gospel have abounded. This has left many Colombians skeptical of Christianity or hurt by legalism. Our church has sought to be a place of healing, and many have renewed their faith in the Lord and the simplicity of following Him.
Things to celebrate
We are thankful for a team of enthusiastic workers serving at Family Church.
We are thankful for the Lord's provision over the past few years. The church building has been remodeled to double its capacity and we have been able to invest in outreach opportunities.
Things to pray for
Pray that we would continue to be a witness for Christ in La Calera and that more people would come to know Him.
Pray for volunteers and ongoing financial provision for the Kids' Club outreach.
Pray for the youth to walk in faith, resisting distractions and secular influences.
Pray for the church to continue to be unified in all areas, working together for the gospel.
